WLODZIMIERZ CIMOSZEWICZ
Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland
Born on 13 September 1950, in Warsaw.
After graduating from the Law Department of Warsaw University in 1972, he worked as an assistant and then lecturer at the university’s Institute of International Law until 1985. His doctorate in legal sciences, specialising in international public law, was awarded in 1978. His academic interests were the preferential treatment granted to developing countries in international trade and a possible revision of the UN Charter. He was a Fulbright Foundation fellow at Columbia University, New York, from 1980 to 1981.
As a student and during the first years of his university career, he was active in student and political organisations.
Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz has been a Member of Parliament since 1989.
In 1990 he ran in Poland’s first presidential elections and in 1991, having chaired the parliamentary Club of the Democratic Left Alliance from 1990-91, he founded the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD), together with Aleksander Kwasniewski, the incumbent President of the Republic of Poland. He also founded the 'Poland in Europe’ Foundation of Social Initiatives.
In 1992-93 he was a member of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly and rapporteur to the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights. He was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice from October 1993 to March 1995. He was then Deputy Speaker of the Sejm (lower house of Parliament) until February 1996.
He was elected Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland in February 1996. He has chaired the Committee for European Integration.
